The 2026 State of the Union address was billed as a “national turnaround” speech, but the headlines today are dominated by a different story: a high-stakes shouting match on the House floor and a social media firestorm that has reignited the fiercest debate in American politics.
Following a chaotic evening that saw heckling, walkouts, and the ejection of at least one lawmaker, President Donald Trump has called for the deportation of Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), labeling them “Low IQ” and “lunatics.”

“When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night… they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized,” Trump wrote.
The Confrontation: “You Have Killed Americans!”
The tension reached a breaking point during the second hour of the President’s speech. As Trump touted his administration’s hard-line immigration enforcement and called for the restoration of border security funding, the chamber erupted.
Reps. Omar and Tlaib were seen shouting from their seats, with Omar repeatedly yelling, “You have killed Americans!” This was a direct reference to the recent controversial deaths of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti during federal immigration operations in Minneapolis. Tlaib joined in, shouting “Liar!” as the President accused Democrats of protecting “dangerous criminals” through sanctuary policies.
The disruption became so intense that House Speaker Mike Johnson later admitted he came “this close” to having the Sergeant-at-Arms eject both women from the floor. Eventually, the two lawmakers walked out of the chamber in protest.
The Fallout: “Send Them Back”
The President did not wait long to respond. In a scathing Truth Social post the following morning, Trump unleashed a rhetorical broadside against the “Squad” members.
He then escalated his rhetoric to a level not seen since his first term, stating: “We should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible. They can only damage the United States of America, they can do nothing to help it.”
The Legal and Political Reality
The President’s “send them back” comments have immediately drawn accusations of xenophobia and racism from across the aisle. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the remarks “disgraceful,” while Rep. Tlaib responded on X, claiming the President is “crashing out.”
Critics have also been quick to point out the legal impossibility of the President’s demand:
• Rashida Tlaib was born in Detroit, Michigan; she has been a U.S. citizen her entire life.
• Ilhan Omar was born in Somalia but has been a naturalized U.S. citizen for nearly 30 years—longer than she lived in her birth country.
A Divided Nation
This incident highlights the deepening chasm in the U.S. government. While Trump’s supporters view his comments as a necessary defense of American decorum and national security, his detractors see them as a dangerous attack on the constitutional rights of sitting members of Congress.
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, this confrontation ensures that immigration and the “soul of the nation” will remain the central battlegrounds for the foreseeable future.
